Random Street Scenes in Small-Town India

India is making amazing economic progress. It has become a country of upscale malls, high-tech companies, and a growing middle class. But it is also still a place of narrow, crowded lanes, tiny shops, fruit and vegetable stands, ramshackle buildings, dirt roads, and shanties.

My students spent our first bus ride staring out the window in amazement, and throughout our trip found our  glimpses of everyday life on Indian streets even more intriguing than the beautiful temples and famous forts we visited.

These random shots of street scenes–many of them taken out of bus windows–may give Western readers some idea of what Indian streets look like, especially in smaller towns.
