Writing Tips on Plot, Setting, Character, Productivity, and More!

Thursday is often the day I offer writing tips. Today, I’m doing things a little differently. I’ve read so many useful blogs on writing this week that, on this Writing Tips Thursday, instead of giving my own tips, I’m going to share some of the ones I’ve come across recently. I’ve picked ones on different topics: plot, setting, character, and productivity. Enjoy!Plot. Want some tips for plotting a novel? Cathy A. Montville offers a simple, clear overview here —especially useful if you’re just getting started or are finding yourself blocked.

Setting. Novelist Jody Hedlund offers five tips for writing setting on her blog—focusing on using setting to create atmosphere and develop characters.

Character. Interested in sharpening and deepening the characters in your fiction? Check out these useful suggestions from Melissa Donovan on the Writing Forward blog.

Productivity. If you’re like me, one of your biggest writing problems is speed. I’m a slow writer—and these tips helped me speed things up a bit. If you want to write faster without sacrificing quality, Tara Horner on Freelance Switch offers these tips for greater productivity in less time.

And here is a potpourri of tips from way back in 2007 (but still relevant!): 34 Writing Tips that Will Make You a Better Writer.
